Big changes are officially coming to one of the most prominent corners in downtown Ventura.
The former Bank of America building located at Main Street and California Avenue is set to become the new headquarters for The Trade Desk, a global advertising technology company that was founded right here in Ventura.
After months of review, discussion, and an appeal process, the project has now received its final approval from the Ventura City Council, clearing the way for redevelopment to begin once permits are secured.
Where Is the Project Located?
The building sits at one of the most visible intersections in downtown Ventura, right at Main Street and California Avenue.
For years, this former bank building has remained vacant, making it a key opportunity site for revitalization in the heart of the city’s commercial corridor.
Who Is The Trade Desk?
The Trade Desk is a Ventura-based ad-tech company founded in 2009. Since then, it has grown into a global business with approximately 4,000 employees and offices around the world.
Despite its global footprint, the company has maintained strong roots in Ventura and currently operates multiple leased office spaces throughout downtown.
This new headquarters will mark the company’s first owned real estate investment in Ventura.
What Is Being Built?
The approved plans include a full renovation of the existing structure, along with several key upgrades:
- Addition of a partial second floor
- Rooftop deck for meetings and events
- Larger windows facing Main Street
- Reconfigured layout with a primary entrance at the rear of the building
While only about 15 employees are expected to work at the headquarters on a daily basis, the space will serve as a hub for executive leadership and company-wide gatherings.
Why Was the Project Controversial?
The biggest point of contention during the approval process centered around the building’s main entrance.
Downtown Ventura design guidelines typically require buildings along Main Street to feature a primary entrance facing the street. However, The Trade Desk proposed placing the main entrance at the rear of the building, facing the parking lot.
A local historic preservation group appealed the Planning Commission’s initial approval, arguing that the design did not align with the intent of maintaining an active and pedestrian-friendly streetscape.
The Trade Desk’s design team responded by explaining that the building would not be open to the public, and a rear entrance would improve security while avoiding confusion for pedestrians encountering a locked front door.
Ultimately, the Ventura City Council voted 7-0 in February to uphold the Planning Commission’s approval, allowing the project to move forward as proposed.
Timeline for Construction
The project is expected to begin once The Trade Desk secures the necessary city permits.
Current estimates suggest construction could be completed in early 2027.
What This Means for Downtown Ventura Real Estate
From a real estate perspective, this is a significant win for downtown Ventura.
A globally recognized company choosing to invest in and establish its headquarters locally signals long-term confidence in the area. While the day-to-day employee count at this location will be relatively small, the presence of executive leadership and corporate events can have a meaningful impact on nearby businesses, foot traffic, and overall perception of the downtown core.
Projects like this also contribute to the ongoing evolution of Main Street, balancing historic character with modern investment.
